As composers develop a personal voice, the first steps are in others' footsteps, eventually setting out on a new path. Some are more adventurous than others; their path is more unique. Here are four celebrated composers who have all created a distinctive musical language. Henry Cowell is one of the first innovative avant-garde composers in American history. His exceptional "Set of Five" will be followed by music of Gershwin, who studied with Cowell and created his own new voice infused with jazz elements. Kenji Bunch's virtuosic solo violin music invites us into a fascinating world evocative of trains. The epitome of innovation, Beethoven pushed the limits -- a surprise at every turn.

"Danceband" for piano trio & percussion (2022) - World Premiere

・・・・・

Kenji Bunch's "Danceband" for piano trio and percussion will have its world premiere, written to celebrate Alpenglow's 25th anniversary!  This dance suite references in the great tradition of baroque dance suites, dating back to J.S. BachRobert Schumann adapted the original suite by Bach, creating a luxurious duo for cello and piano.  Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn revived Bach's music during his own time, and prevented it from fading into obscurity.  We begin this program with his own glorious and impassioned piano trio.

"Circle of Friends"

Soiree #2 at private home

Artists: HORSZOWSKI TRIO - Rieko Aizawa, piano; Jesse Mills, violin; Ole Akahoshi, cello

  R. Schumann

Fantasiestücke for Cello and Piano, Op.73

  C. Schumann

Piano Trio in g minor, Op.17

  Brahms

  Piano Trio #1 in B Major, Op.8

・・・・・

Join us for a full recital program by the ensemble-in-residence, Horszowski Trio.  These three magnificent composers will forever be intertwined, their own masterworks cannot be separated from the friendship and admiration they all shared.  Robert Schumann's Fantasiestücke is full of character, beauty, and song.  His wife, Clara was his muse, and she herself was a masterful pianist and composer, creating this amazing romantic piano trio which inspired her husband to write his own piano trios soon after.  The Schumanns championed the younger genius, Brahms, whose Piano Trio op. 8 was revised and rewritten late in his life, heeding Clara's compositional advice, as he created this iconic version for eternity.
